High differential pressure is one of the most common faults in industrial filtration systems. It not only signals increased energy consumption but also indicates potential risks like filter element blockage, equipment wear, or even system shutdown. Filter Element Blockage & End of Service Life
This is the most direct cause. As operating time increases, the filter media accumulates a large amount of particles, colloids, or oil on its surface and within its depth. When the dirt holding capacity reaches saturation and flow channels become physically blocked, the differential pressure rises sharply. If the filter element is approaching or has exceeded its recommended replacement cycle, it should be replaced immediately to avoid unnecessary troubleshooting.
System Flow Overload or Fluid Viscosity Changes
If the actual system flow exceeds the filter element’s rated flow, the excessive flow velocity leads to a surge in resistance. Additionally, environmental factors play a crucial role. For instance, in low-temperature environments, the viscosity of hydraulic oil or liquids increases significantly. This higher resistance to flow directly results in elevated differential pressure readings.
Failure of Upstream Pre-treatment
If upstream pre-filtration equipment (such as coarse screens or settling tanks) fails, a large volume of untreated impurities can “invade” the precision filter element. This causes the filter to become overloaded instantly, forming a dense filter cake and leading to a cliff-like spike in differential pressure within a short period.
Instrument False Alarms or Valve Malfunctions
Before investigating hardware issues, please confirm whether the differential pressure gauge has been calibrated to rule out false alarms. Simultaneously, check if the inlet and outlet valves are fully open. Partially closed valves create local throttling, generating a false high-pressure drop signal.
